Why?
For a volunteer, donor, board or staff member of a nonprofit, serving the cause of the organization is typically the thing that motivates them to get involved and want to help change their community for the better.
But the cause alone does not create sustainability. Nonprofit organizations that are successful and have greater “buying power” because they operate according to best practices that are upheld and implemented by governing boards - annual reports, information about boards of directors, audits, strategic plans, etc. are available to prospective donors. Donors have more confidence in organizations that have strong boards that uphold their fiduciary duty in a transparent manner with integrity.
